Because of the high melt viscosity or their polar structure, these polymers release the friction partners and shift the metal working process towards hydrodynamic friction. These water-based polymer additives are responsible for a drastic reduction of the friction. Therefore, the temperature during metal working is significantly lower, which results in much better surface quality of the workpieces. Additionally, these water-based polymers exhibit less dermatological problems, no regulatory problems and no (or less) problems with labeling.

The strip drawing testThe strip drawing test simulates the conditions of a deep drawing process. It illustrates the effectiveness of the polymer additives and shows the difference between polar, highly viscous additives and a deep drawing oil as reference. In the strip drawing test, a metal strip coated with the respective lubricant, is drawn through two flat dies at a constant speed.

The upper tool adjusts the downholder from the deep drawing process and presses on the metal strip with a freely selectable force (contact tension). The coefficient of friction for the respective lubricant can be calculated mathematically from the measured tensile force and the contact tension.
